Adjectives are describing words.

                                                                

These are the first 100 basic adjectives to learn. 

Practice writing them. 

Is your child reading at least a French book a day?

 

I cannot stress enough the benefits of reading - vocabulary increases, better pronunciation, words recognition, writing improves, acquiring new knowledge, sparks creativity & imagination, self-confidence increases, ability to learn by themselves, etc.

Ask your child to read a French book each day on the classroom website and ask him or her to tell you what it is about. Listen him say the French words, ask him or her questions, what they mean. 

Is the pronunciation similar to the audio text? Does he or she really understood the story? And if your child is able to retell the story in French, then he or she is making very good progress.

Keep track of each book your child read. We expect the child to be able to read a GB+ book - level 6.

Field Trip at Jack Smythe Centre

It was a very interesting trip. The students learnt about mapping, how to use a map to find locations. 

 
They planted 2 sunflower seeds in the garden plots and learnt from Gary, our instructor, about small and big the trees in the forest.

Pluriel (Plural)

When there is more than one person or thing, we often add an S to the word.

For example,  

le  bébé  (the baby)  becomes  les  bébés  (the babies)

le  garçon  (the boy)  becomes  les  garçons  (the boys)

la  fille  (the girl)  becomes  les  filles  (the girls)

un  bébé  (a baby)  becomes  des  bébés  (many babies)

une  maison  (a house)  becomes  des  maisons  (many houses)

 

le  grand  lac  (the big lake)  becomes  les  grands  lacs  (the big lakes)

une  jolie  fille  (a pretty girl)  becomes  des  jolies  filles

 

There are exceptions, for example,

le  cheval  (the horse)  becomes  les  chevaux  (the horses)

le  couteau  (the knife)  becomes  les  couteaux  (the knives)

un jeu  (a game)  becomes  des  jeux  (many games)

Don't worry about the exceptions, The students will learn them little by little.

The important thing, your child understand the patterns or rules for plural:

le, la  (the)  becomes  les  (the)

un  (a)  becomes  des  (many)

Words like petit or chat (adjectives & nouns) generally have an S added to them.

petits  chats  (small  cats)

Super Hero Cape Towel

  

Please allow your child to bring a bath towel to school on Friday. It is going to be used as a Super Hero cape. It must not be white. It needs to have a colour. They are also going to use it during the assembly.

Jack Smythe Field Centre Trip

I hope all parents will allow their students to attend this educational field trip. Some of you who have not signed the Health & Safety form (white form) regarding their child's health, please do so and return it tomorrow, Thursday. We believe your child will enjoy the trip and learn a lot from it.

Please bring litterless food during the trip.

La température (The temperature)

Comment savons-nous qu'il fait chaud ou froid?

How do we know it is warmer or colder?

Quand il fait chaud, on transpire. Quand il fait froid, on grelotte.

When it gets hot, we sweat. When it gets cold, we shiver.

 

On utilise un thermomètre pour mesurer la temperature pour savoir s'il fait chaud ou froid.
We use a thermometer to measure the temperature to know how warm or cold it is. 

Quand il fait chaud, la ligne rouge du thermomètre monte. Quand il fait froid, la ligne rouge descend.

When it becomes hot, the red line in the thermometer goes up. When it becomes cold, the red line goes down. 

On lit le chiffre sur le thermomètre en Celsius (°C) ou Fahrenheit (F). Celsius est plus facile. 
We read the number on the thermometer in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (F). Celsius is easier. 

À 0 °C (Celsius), l'eau gèle et devient la glace. 
At 0 °C (Celsius), water freezes and becomes ice. 

 
À 100 °C, l'eau bouillit et devient la vapeur.
At 100 °C, water boils and become steam. 

 

À quelle temperature sommes nous comfortable?
At what temperatute are we comfortable?

As-tu un thermomètre à la maison? Quelle est la température? Peux-tu mesurer la température de la glace?
Do you have a thermometer at home. What is the temperature? Can you measure the temperature of ice?
 

Practice for the next Assembly on April 30 (Open House)

Grade 1 French Immersion will be hoisting the assembly on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 (Open House Day).

On peut mésurer la longueur, la largeur et la hauteur de la boîte avec des trombones.

We can measure the length, the width and the height of a box with paper clips.

La hauteur de la boîte est 5 trombones.

The height of the box is 5 paper clips. 

La longueur de la boîte est à peu près 4 trombones.

The length of the box is about 4 paper clips.

La largeur de la boîte est 2 trombones.

The width of the box is 2 paper clips.

Fractions

When we divide a pizza into 2 equal parts, the 2 parts are called half or halves and we use ½ to represent it. In French, we called it moitié or demie.

Quand on coupe une pizza en deux parties égales, on appelle chaque partie moitié ou demie et on écrit ½ .

When we divide a pizza into 4 equal parts, the 4 parts are called quarters and we use ¼ to represent it. In French, we called it un quart.

Quand on coupe une pizza en 4 parties égales, on appelle chaque partie un quart et on écrit ¼ .

Spirit Day

 

This monday, April 15 will be a Spirit Day at Ridgewood.  Please wear the school colours (Green and Yellow) to show our school spirit if possible.

It is very important that your child read at least a French book each day ALOUD. It will help them increase their vocabulary and to pronounce correctly. Keep track of the books they read.

Better still, they copy the book. It helps them to write and to learn to spell.
